  Last year I paid $400-ish for HR Block to do my 2011 return. I recently found some mistakes, including one that would get me another $150-ish. So, I happily returned to HR Block so they could correct their mistake, and they've been investigating it for a week or so. Yesterday, this happened: 1) HRBlock called and asked me to bring my 2011 return in so they can have a look. 2) I came in right away. 3) They observed "staple holes" in the copy of my return they provided me with. 4) They informed me that checking for "staple holes" is part of their internal procedure to determine whether people asking for a correction had originally provided ALL the forms needed to file a correct return. The idea is that everything used for the return is supposed to be stapled together when the return is first completed, if additional forms were attached then the staples would leave holes. 5) Put me in the position of wondering if I HAD removed the staples at some point, and trying to recall vague memories that HRBlock's agents had actually done that themselves a few times. And getting defensive about not receiving the services that I'd already paid for. 6) I pointed out that many documents that were clearly used on the return were NOT stapled with it, (and never had been) and that the document needed to correct the error also was NOT stapled. Therefore, it seems pretty clear that I was not engaged in staple-deception, and that not all the documents had been stapled. 7) After some discussion, the agent wanted a copy of my return and brought one out to check if it was the right one. 8) I immediately pointed out that they HAD A COPY of my return, so clearly they must have left staple holes when they copied it. 9) They said that the copy might have been printed off their system. 10) I pointed out that THE STAPLE HOLES THEMSELVES HAD BEEN COPIED RIGHT ONTO THE PAPER! There are staple holes in my return because the very woman across from me at the desk had clearly removed and restapled it HERSELF in order to make a photocopy. 11) Thank you Matlock! Case solved! The very people accusing me of deception had planted evidence. Not on purpose, they just don't adhere to their very own no-restapling rules well enough to protect the guarantees that my $400 had purchased for me. 12) Still, that doesn't conclude that I originally provided the document that was needed. I don't care. I EXPECT to be able to rely on HRBlock to service every return they've ever done and fulfill every one of their guarantees without having to be some kind of staple-detective. And I don't care what the condition of my staple-holes is, I expect them to do what I paid them for anyway and rely on it. What is WRONG WITH YOU? Some things that are NOT ACCEPTABLE: 1) Risking my $400 worth of services and guarantees on the off-chance that I might have unstapled my return at some time or another for whatever inane thing I might have been referencing it for. This is a thing I was LIKELY to do, I spent many hours reviewing it for my recent tax return. 2) Putting me on the defensive for wanting the services and guarantees I'd already paid for. I DON'T CARE how you choose to enforce these rules, but I expect you to do it reliably and without invoking my sense of persecution and need to prove myself. 3) Asking me to attend an office meeting for this purpose. What intrinsic purpose was I there for? Clarifying failures to follow your internal procedures and responsibilities? 4) Failure to respect that I have VAST PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE that I provided these documents to their agent. Whether they honor their obligations or not, I'll know that I was cheated.

  I would give zero stars if it was possible considering zero is the amount of tax returns they actually filed with the irs after charging me nearly $400. Not only did they fail to file them but refused to complete their job once I made them aware of the mistake. Complete lack of professionalism. Go anywhere else but here.
